The Boys!

Owing to our set-up, we only keep a small number of males where quality more than quantity is important.

We purchased Rigg Apache from Moira Morrison and John Bogue in 2016, and he has given us such a very positive start to owning a ram. His kindly, easy nature made him extremely easy to deal with - one of the many great attributes he passed on to his offspring!  Sadly we lost Apache in Autumn 2020 however he will never be forgotten and his positive influence through the flock will continue through his many descendants for years to come.

Muncaster Felix joined Annavale in 2019. He was spotted in his pen at the Carlisle sale early in the day, and ended up coming home to Annavale that evening ... he clearly caught the judges eye too, as he ended up Supreme Champion on the day!

Moira & John very kindly allowed us to borrow Rigg Gilfrid in 2020. This ram was uniquely bred and we were allowed to use him on a small number of ewes.  He too had a positive influence on the flock and we have retained nearly all of his daughters.

In 2023 we welcomed Raedykes Dexter to the flock, bred by Ian and Lesley Carnegie up in Huntly.  The ram had caught the eye of David whilst he was being shown by his breeder at the Royal Highland Show.  David made enquiries in the ring, and the rest is history!  His first crop of lambs in 2024 were superb and picked up many wins in the ring, as well as one ram lamb being top price at Carlisle 2024.

As our coloured flock was growing in number we needed to source more top quality coloured genetics for our breeding programme in 2023, and we are hugely grateful to Kate Sharp for her help in this area.  Kate owns the renowned "Ewingston" flock of Shetland Sheep, which have been the pinnacle of the breed for a number of years, with a consistent and impressive number of wins at the largest of UK shows.  Kate kindly allowed us to use three of her coloured rams, and their 2024 offspring have given us a great start.  We have retained a number of coloured gimmers for breeding, and were very proud to breed Biggarburn Axel (Reserve Supreme Champion Carlisle 2024, as well as Best Lamb) who is sired by Ewingston Jacob.

In a chance offering, we were able to purchase the impeccably bred white male, Ewingston Zeus in summer 2024. His first crop of lambs are expected in April 2025.

As we look ahead to 2025 lambing, we potentially have offspring due from no less than 7 different rams of four different colours - so watch this space!

For those who may only keep a small number of Shetland Sheep and/or do not wish to have their own ram, we can assist by having ewes at livery during tupping time.

Apache was a wonderful senior ram, who not only produced the goods but taught us so much about this wonderful breed.  He produced superbly for us here at Annavale, whilst always being a gentleman to deal with. He is still sorely missed in the flock, however his influence as a sire runs through just nearly every successful like we have.

SSS Approved Ram.

Felix added a different element to the flock and his first lambs hit the ground in Spring 2020 - a promising bunch indeed!  He was used for crossing with more commercial types with huge success, passing on his strong wide frame and excellent depth.

Felix was sold in 2021 as he had been used extensively throughout the Annavale flock.  He returned to Annavale in 2024, but we sadly lost him in early 2025 ... one small positive was this we lost him after tupping time, so we should see a very special generation of his offspring appear in the Spring.

Dexter was purchased from Ian Carnegie of the highly regarded Raedykes Flock of Shetland Sheep in Huntly.  He has a perfect temperament!

His super Shetland character, correct conformation, wide & deep frame and soft crimpy wool make him a valuable asset to take our breeding forward. His first crop of lambs arrived in Spring 2024 and showed great potential.  One of his offspring was declared winner of Best Lamb at the RHS 2024 and at the GYS 2024.

David first encountered Zeus at Central and West Fife Show, whilst he was judging.  He thought Zeus was such an outstanding example all through that he made him supreme breed champion on the day (pictured top right, with his then owner, and breeder, Kate Sharp).

It was only after doing some research that we discovered Zeus' pedigree contained some of our all time favourite sheep - such as the Royal Highland Show winners Ewingston Jack Frost and Rigg Gareth.  Even more special, his great-grand dam turned out to be one of our incredible foundation ewes, Rench Ivory!  We knew he would be a valuable addition to our flock...

After much persuasion, Kate kindly agreed to sell Zeus to us and he joined Annavale in late summer 2024.  We showed him at the latter shows of the season, taking overall champion each time.  We can't wait to see what this super chap produces for us.

Biggarburn Axel

Axel was one of the first coloured sheep to be bred here at Annavale & Biggarburn, so deserves a special mention!  Sired by the wonderful Ewingston Jacob, whom Kate Sharp kindly allowed us to use on our first purchased coloured, Blackford Hazel.

Axel won well with us as a ram lamb, but didn't really have a job for the autumn so was entered at Carlisle Show & Sale.  He exceeded all expectations winning best Grey Katmoget, Best Lamb, Best Male, and Reserve Supreme Champion!  WOW!

Sadly, he didn't make his reserve that day so came home with us...

Shortly after the sale we were contacted by well known breeders Robin & Ann Lacy who were interested in him, and in the autumn of 2024 he made his way off to join their Flitwick flock in Yorkshire.  His first lambs are expected in spring 2025!

In March 2024 twin lambs arrived from our uniquely bred black ewe Corstopitum Genny (sired by an Island ram and out of a Rivendell ewe).  The ram lamb had such unique face markings at the time, we nicknamed him Panda - which has stuck!  At his first shows Panda placed very well indeed, winning his classes on several occasions.

As he grow on it became apparent he was something quite special, and a real character!

We are looking forward to getting him out to some shows in 2025.
